Spirit Airlines Plane Sees Smoke, Flames After Brake Overheats During Safe Landing At Atlanta Airport
My biggest worry when flying is that my leg will develop a deep vein thrombosis from being crammed into the sardine wood you might call an airplane seat. But on the bright side, I'm not increasing my risk of lung cancer, emphysema, or bronchitis from secondhand smoke.
Wednesday marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. ban on smoking on nearly all domestic flights.
It was not easy to get fresh air at the top. Flight attendants began fighting for smoke-free workplaces in the 1960s, joined by health advocates and airline pilots. In 1972, after a survey showed that 60 percent of airline passengers suffered from smoke in the cabin, the Civil Aviation Board designated separate sections for smokers and non-smokers.
However, the smoking area created a lot of problems for the airline staff and did not make the passengers and crew comfortable. Despite the mishaps, the regulators were confused.

In a 1986 report, the National Research Council called "unanimously and strongly" for a smoking ban on all commercial flights. The board found that flight attendants are exposed to the same amount of smoke as a pack of smokers for a day.
In 1987, Congress banned smoking on flights of less than two hours; Flight attendants, health groups and consumers continued to push for a total ban. A study published in
In 1989, it was found that passengers in non-smoking areas were as likely to be exposed to smoke as passengers in smoking areas.
In 1990, the ban was extended to all domestic flights of six hours or less. It took another decade of lawsuits, research, publicity, and fines, but in 2000, Congress passed a law banning smoking on all flights in and out of the country.
Where There's Smoke, There's Theory
It all seems like a long time ago. But given human nature, not everyone is ready to say goodbye to lighting.
In 2007, singer Amy Winehouse spent half an hour smoking in the toilet on a flight from London to Glasgow. In 2010, a Qatari diplomat decided to light a pipe on a flight from Washington DC to Denver. A family on a flight from Halifax, Nova Scotia to the Dominican Republic was forced to disembark after smoking in the bathroom and arguing with flight attendants.
And just a few weeks ago, Paris Hilton's younger brother smoked marijuana and called other passengers "men" on a flight from London to Los Angeles. He now faces federal charges.
Not every idiot who tries to smoke makes the news. A few years ago I was walking home from school and I smelled cigarette smoke. When the flight attendants knocked on the bathroom door, a confused man came out. The flight attendants escorted him to his new seat in no time and kept a close eye on him for the remainder of the flight.

The Department of Transportation believes that e-cigarettes are included in the current smoking ban, and the department is now determining whether an outright ban is necessary.
But many airlines have already included e-cigarettes in their policies, and non-smoking passengers are reportedly starting to tell flight attendants that the friendly skies are smoke-free zones. 18g 12V or 24V Power Fits All Aircraft Pump Flow: 1.8 +/- GPM Tank Capacity: 3.5 Gallons Oil Spray Rate: 0.8 +/- GPM Total...
